In the far and darkest corner of the North East, resides a distinctive and diverse group of creatives, known collectively as “Redcar Creatives.” From performers to painters, designers to photographers, many nationally recognised, some internationally, but all leaders in their field. Between the 27th and 30th May 2011, Redcar Creatives will come together to show the work in eight separate venues throughout Redcar and Cleveland.
As part of this, we had to have out photographs taken… Now I’m a photographer, theres a reason for that… I hate being on the glass side of a camera… Recently, I’ve been on the wrong end too many times! However, in this instance it was a good friend Keith Moss, who was taking the portraits, an expert in his field, he knows how to make anyone relax as he crafts the images he wants and his clients need. So I donned my best T-Shirt for the occasion and made my way to the location in an opened topped Sun Beam from the 1960’s.
First up, Keith had to assemble us all together to do a large group shoot, but in a way that allowed our separate personalities to shine through… Well he had been out and scouted the perfect location, a classic Georgian mansion, with a Victorian kitchen called Ormsby Hall. It was perfect, with the massive big windows, meaning he could get away with available light!
Keith, work’s very differently to me, he shoots with a Phase One digital camera and when he can, tethered direct in to his Mac Book Pro, this gives him the advantage of being able to instantly check the image over for quality, sharpness and detail. Perfect for this kind of shoot, however I don’t know how well it would work shooting football on a wet and cold December evening, or mountain biking on a mountain side?
Group shoot done and dusted, it was down to the individual portraits of each creative taking part… Being a red hot day, with stacks of editing to do, I set up my office in the gardens to wait my turn… and forgot to apply the sun cream… so by mid afternoon I had gone a funny British shade of pink… luck was on my side, as Keith was working in black and white…
There’s having your photo taken, and then there is having your photo taken pretending to do something, worse doing something with a camera… but again Keith quickly set up a perfect shot and puts you at ease, before you know it, he’s showing you his finished image.
And that would have been it, done and dusted! The most painful thing a photographer can experience, having his own photograph taken… however I had to watch as the shoe was soon put on the other foot and Keith needed his photograph taken… Ha!
