Saturday the 5th December saw Nottingham city centre play host to the far right English Defence League (EDL). A number of major city centre roads were closed during the rally which saw approximately 700 EDL supporters march through Nottingham and was followed by violent clashes between the EDL and police. There were also a number of sporadic skirmishes between members of the EDL and UAF supporters.
Nottingham was the EDL’s latest in a growing number of public demonstrations against what they call the Islamification of Britain. Whilst they claim their demonstrations are peaceful events, in objection to the growing pacification towards radical muslim’s and the watering down of the British identity, violence has been a common occurrence at the majority of the EDL’s demonstrations, largely due to counter protests held by Unite Against Fascism (UAF) and supporters who claim that the EDL is a fascist and racist organisation.
