An exhibition of two half’s is currently showing at The Side Gallery in Newcastle, until the 28th May. And I’m honoured to say, that is contains some of my work. Work from demonstrations which I have photographed over the last two years in Britain.
“An exhibition of classic photography from the Side Archive & an “open show” of contemporary images from photographers, activists & civilians. Capturing demonstrations, resistance and revolution.” – Side Gallery
The exhibition, is split in to two parts, the first, is from the archives of The Side Gallery and includes work by; Dean Chapman, Chris Steele-Perkins, Paul Trevor, Manuel Bravo, Casasola, Steve Conlan, Raymond Depardon, Bob Gannon, Paul Lowe, Susan Meiselas, Tish Murtha, Keith Pattison, Mark Power, Humphrey Spender. This work is all black and white and covers The Berlin Wall to Tiananmen Square, The Jarrow March to the Miners’ Strike, Poll Tax riots to Northern Ireland, Mexico, Chile, Brixton, Burma, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Romania and Notting Hill, its all there, political unrest, uprising, demonstrations, resistance and revolution in the finest documentary tradition.
The second part of the show is made up from work submitted for the show from an open call for work. Largely colour work, this section shows contemporary images from the modern wave of protest photography. With work from resent events in Egypt, Yemen, Burma, tuition-fee protests, tax-avoiding companies, the UAF/EDL, anti-war rallies and the G8. Work will continue to come in and will be added to the exhibition.
This show comes at an appropriate time for The Side Gallery, as it opened three days after it was announced that the Arts Council’s, The Side’s main funding source, had axed their funding. Despite the fact that The Side Gallery is the only gallery in the country dedicated to documentary photography and continues to deliver what is unquestionably the strongest cultural legacy created in the North East.
