Each month, I feature my best Instagram shot, as chosen by the likes and comments of my followers. My photographs from Nepal always prove to be very popular on Instagram, this one was to be no exception. We had been working in the tiny village of Gokyo, which sits high in the Himalayas at 5,000m. Waking pre-dawn we had climbed up Gokyo Ri (5,357 m) to watch as the sun rose over Mount Everest and the surrounding mountains.
We had been working in the tiny village of Gokyo, which sits high in the Himalayas at 5,000m. Waking pre-dawn we had climbed up Gokyo Ri (5,357 m) to watch as the sun rose over Mount Everest and the surrounding mountains. Temperatures were well below freezing, as we climbed in the dark, guided only by the small pool of light from our head torches. Sitting, looking east as the night slowly gave way to dawn, was an unforgettable experience, even if a little cold. Then, as if by magic the sun appeared, instantly warming, allowing us to stuff our down jackets away and soak up the day.
Prayer Flags
Prayer flags can be found everywhere in Nepal, especially strung along mountain ridges and adorning peaks of mountains and hills. They are used to bless the surrounding countryside, to promote peace, compassion, strength, and wisdom. The belief is that prayers and mantras will be blown by the wind to spread the good will and compassion into all pervading space. As the wind passes over the surface of the flags, which are sensitive to the slightest movement of the wind, the air is purified and sanctified by the mantras.
